COLLECTOR SPOTLIGHT: Hartmut Brie 2016

GELEDE (Yoruba)

ANIMAL MASKS TIERMASKENMASQUES D'ANIMAUX

Most of the objects come from Cové (Bénin). 4 Janus masks are exceptional, two with Mami Wata motives are very rare. So are some birds.
Collection of 66 items, individual item prices on request.

If generally  speaking most of the masks allude to every-day life, some may have religious significance originated in Yoruba cult. The rather important role of women with Gelede mask is a phenomenon pretty rare in Africa. Some scenes prove to be rather violent.

For some items there are appraisals from a German ethnologist.
