GELEDE (Yoruba)
ANIMAL MASKS TIERMASKENMASQUES D'ANIMAUX
Most of the objects come from Cové (Bénin). 4 Janus masks are exceptional, two with Mami Wata motives are very rare. So are some birds. If generally speaking most of the masks allude to every-day life, some may have religious significance originated in Yoruba cult. The rather important role of women with Gelede mask is a phenomenon pretty rare in Africa. Some scenes prove to be rather violent. For some items there are appraisals from a German ethnologist. |
